Vision
PHOTON (1982) is the first chapter of the GAILORD PHOTON project, an artistic research dedicated to the elementary unit of light: the photon.
Since its origin, photography has consisted of gathering light to form an image. PHOTON proposes to reverse that logic: no longer consider only the final image, but make the luminous event itself an artistic material.
The work now extends across a complete atelier: creation studio, spectral gallery, print workshop, certificate authority and live capture.
One photon. One event. One instant. One piece of information.
The image emerges from this invisible matter to be viewed, printed, collected, performed.

What remains of photography when we descend to the photonic event?
The conventional photographic image gives the impression of a continuous instant. At the photonic scale, that continuity disappears. Light can be considered a succession of detectable events. The image then becomes an accumulation: one event after another, until a form begins to emerge from noise and darkness.
PHOTON wants to make visible this birth of the image.
02 B
Gallery and acquisition
Each PHOTON series has its own detection parameters: subject (portrait, body, landscape, object, noise field, abstract gesture), event rate, decay, noise and spectral palette.
The gallery brings together figurative, spectral and GESTE series. Every piece is available as a unique 1/1 print, a numbered edition /8 with certificate, or a sealed digital master.
02 C
Studio: create your work
The detector becomes an instrument. You write a name sea, mountain, self-portrait, nocturne and the engine derives a seed, a field archetype and a palette. An imported image, a pasted capture or a live camera feed is read as luminance and reconstructed photon by photon.
Once the field is frozen, save it to the gallery, send it to the shop or move it directly to the print studio. By entering your creator name, the piece is cosigned GAILORD your name.
03
1 photon = 1 event
The plastic principle rests on a deliberately minimal rule:
1 photon detected → 1 graphic event
- X / Yposition in the image
- Tmoment of detection
- ΔTpossible time of flight
- Nnumber of events
- Pprobability / confidence
- Dreconstructed depth
This data becomes the artist's palette. Light is no longer used only to illuminate the subject: it becomes the material of the work.
03 B
The artistic matter
The artistic goal remains to make visible the birth of the image from elementary light. The form: a portrait, a body, a landscape or an object that, seen from afar, looks photographic. Up close, it breaks apart into thousands of luminous events.
Photon = matter
The elementary unit of the work: a detected photon, an event.
Pixel = cell
The receptacle, the cell of the real where the event is inscribed.
Time = color
The moment of arrival, converted into the chromatic scale of time of flight.
Depth = volume
The reconstructed distance becomes relief, depth, sculpture.
Probability = transparency
The confidence of the measurement modulates the opacity of the event.
Noise = texture
Noise is not erased: it becomes grain, matter, breath.
PIXEL doesn't have to become the name of the movement: it is only its cell. The core remains PHOTON.

- NPHOTONSthe image exists.
The work is no longer only the final result: its appearance is part of the work. An installation could show this reconstruction in real time on a monumental screen, the viewer stands before a black surface and gradually observes their own presence appearing, event after event.
05
Time becomes a color
With a temporal photonic detection system, for example an experimental device using SPADs (Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes), the arrival moment of a photon becomes usable data.
emission → propagation → reflection → detection → timestamp
d = c Δt / 2
- Time → colorDistance → reliefNumber of photons → intensityNoise → textureProbability → transparency
The time of light becomes a new palette.

Quantic Artist
QUANTIC ARTIST is the conceptual identity Gailord uses for this research. It does not claim that every photograph made within the project constitutes a quantum physics experiment.
The term designates an artistic territory inspired by the discrete nature of light, photonic detection, probabilities and the technologies that allow exploring very low-light regimes. This distinction allows the project to keep both its poetic power and its scientific credibility.

07
The prototype
The ambition of PHOTON (1982) is to build a first experimental device in which camera, optics, photonic detection and computation become a single artistic instrument.

A first version can be entirely experimental. A later evolution could pair a professional photographic platform with a specialized photonic detection module. As long as no official partnership exists, the public presentation refers to a conceptual prototype compatible with a professional photographic ecosystem.
08
The physical work
PHOTON is not meant to remain only on a screen. The data can produce a physical work of very large format, from 60 cm studies to monumental murals over 2 metres, on 360 g paper, framed, mounted or prepared as a gift.
From a distance, the viewer sees a portrait or a landscape. Up close, the image gradually disappears. What remains is thousands of points, each point representing a photonic event.

Immersive installation
The most spectacular form of the project would be a PHOTON ROOM: a room plunged into darkness. A visitor enters. At first, NO SIGNAL. Then a few luminous events appear.
The visitor's presence gradually modulates the rate of events. After a few moments, a face, a body, a landscape emerges from the blackness. The work is not projected onto the visitor: the visitor is the source of the photons that compose the image.
10 Manifesto
I no longer want only to photograph light.
I want to work with its elementary event.
A photon can become a point. An instant can become a color. A distance can become a shape. A probability can become an image.
Where photography accumulates light, PHOTON seeks to reveal its appearance.
The image is no longer necessarily taken. It emerges in the studio, in the gallery, in the print, before the camera.
One photon. One event. One artwork.
